Module 3  |  Recent developments in animal nutrition

TUESDAY 17 JUNE

Two recent developments in animal nutrition will be presented in this module.

The first topic is "Functional properties of fibre in animal nutrition"
The second subject is "Effect of diet formulation and feed processing on protein and starch digestion kinetics and nutrient supply"

Learning objectives

  • classification of complex carbohydrates and understanding of the differences between chemical and functional classification of fibre fractions.
  • the effect of particle size of fibre fractions on the retention time of digesta in the stomach / rumen and the transit through the intestinal tract.
  • how to measure the particle size of pellets (wet sieving method) and how to measure the in vivo and in vitro fibre, protein and starch degradation kinetics.
  • relevance of fibre content and particle size on animal health. Examples from cattle, poultry and pigs will be explained.
  • the effect of by modern feed production technologies and feed additives on fibre, protein and starch digestion kinetics.
  • Development of implementation of in vitro degradation kinetics for diet formulation.

Remarks

  • Please be aware that SFR recommendations will not be presented during this module.

MODULE 2: TUESDAY 17 JUNE

Recent developments in animal nutrition

Welcome and introduction

Functional properties of fibre in animal nutrition

Crude fibre is not accurate enough for diet formulations or to predict animal performance and gut health. Developments in chemical and functional classification of fibre fractions will be explained. A second item in this module is the effect of feed processing, particle size, dietary factors and additives on the functional properties of dietary fibre in cattle, poultry and pigs.

Effect of diet formulation and feed processing on protein and starch digestion kinetics and nutrient supply

During this session the effect of feed processing on the rate of protein and starch degradation and digestion of different feedstuffs will be presented. The application of degradation kinetics is multi-species, since this affects the formation of rumen microbial biomass, the amount of rumen bypass nutrients and the rate of absorption of nutrients from the intestinal tract in poultry and pigs. We learn from new laboratory technologies and developments from human medicine research to measure digesta developments in pigs.
